Abstract
Women have always faced numerous difficulties, whether due to cultural or social factors. Throughout history, their rights and opportunities have been limited. One way to study prejudice is through infra-humanization, a social theory that involves attributing fewer emotions, thoughts, and human characteristics to members of a social group considered 'inferior.' The primary objective of this study was to analyze the role of infra-humanization in a situation involving the photograph of a Black woman in relation to the attribution of racism within the context of romantic relationships. A total of 108 university students over 18 years of age, of both genders and from various degree programs, participated voluntarily. The study used a manipulated scenario with two photos (one of a Black woman and one of a White woman), along with the Ambivalent Sexism Scale, the Modern Racism Scale, and a sociodemographic questionnaire. Statistical analysis was performed using Jamovi. The results indicated through the analyses that there is a relationship between the variables: experimental condition (Black woman), sexism, primary and secondary emotions, and racism. Double mediation analyses showed that primary emotions (B=0.31; SE=0.11; 95%CI 0.25; 0.53; p=0.001) and secondary emotions (B=0.12; SE=0.04; 95%CI 0.03; 0.21; p=0.00) had an indirect effect, meaning that emotions function as mediators in the relationship between the experimental condition and racism. Thus, it was confirmed that infra-humanization occurs through the perception of Black-skinned women, legitimizing modern racism.
